The District of Columbia, was founded on July 16, 1790, it is a federal district as specified by the United States Constitution,
and the capital of the United States. The federal district was formed to keep the national capital distinct from the states.
Besides the centers of all three branches of the U.S. government, Washington D. C. is home to numerous attractions. The National
Mall, extending two miles from Capital Hill to the Lincoln Memorial, consists of: The Washington Monument, The National Museum
of American History, The National Museum of Natural History, The National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden, The National Gallery
of Art,The United States Capitol, The Ulysses S. Grant Memorial, The National Archives, The United States Botanic Garden,
The National Museum of the American Indian, The National Air and Space Museum, The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden,
The Arts and Industries Building, The Smithsonian Institution Building, The Freer Gallery of Art, The Arthur M. Sackler
Gallery, The National Sylvan Theater, the National World War II Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Vietnam
Veterans Memorial, the National Museum of African Art, and the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool.
Other attractions within walking distance of the Mall include the Library of Congress and the United States Supreme Court
building east of the Capitol; the White House (on a line directly north of the Jefferson Memorial), the National Archives,
the Old Post Office, the National Theatre, Ford's Theater, and the Albert Einstein Memorial to the north; the National
Postal Museum, and Union Station to the northeast; and the Jefferson Memorial (on a line directly south of the White House),
the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, the George Mason Memorial, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the Bureau
of Engraving and Printing to the south.
The White House, the home to every US president except George Washington, is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
