The Outer Banks are a 100-mile long string of narrow barrier islands off the coast of North
Carolina. The Wright Brothers' first flight took place on the Outer Banks on December 17,
1903, at Kill Devil Hills, near the sea-front town of Kitty Hawk. Roanoke Island, North Carolina, was the
site of the 16th century Roanoke Colony, the first English colony in the New World in what
was then called Virginia. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was built in 1870, and at 193 ft is the
tallest brick lighthouse in the United States.

lighthouse in the nation.
