In Maryland, the gateway to the West, The Historic National Road (US Route 40) is the most historic transportation corridor in the nation. This early 19th century road opened a trade and communication corridor between the port of Baltimore and new territory in "the Ohio Country. For Civil War buffs, look for the signs for the "Maryland Civil War Trails" with numerous historic sites. Baltimore is home to numerous museums and historic places. The Edgar Allan Poe House, The National Aquarium, Babe Ruth's Home, and the Baltimore Maritime Museum. The Birthplace of American Railroading, hosts the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum. Architecturally and historically significant railroad buildings and structures are preserved as a part of the Museums collection. The Ellicott City Station is the oldest surviving railroad station in America, and was the original terminus of the first 13 miles of commercial railroad in the country. The site features the Main Depot building, constructed in 1830-31. The Inner Harbor is home to the USS Constellation, the last American Civil War ship still floating. Look for a sign to help you get there.

Fort McHenry was designated a "National Monument and Historic Shrine," the only such doubly designated place in the United States. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966. It has become a national tradition that when a new flag is designed it first flies over Fort McHenry.

At Assateague, a barrier island, you can while away the hours watching the wild ponies roam. Or find a secluded stretch of beach and let the salty breeze soothe you. Or canoe secluded coves on the bayside. Or stroll the pine forests. For the thrill seekers there is Ocean City with it's Boardwalk, amusements, and beautiful beaches.

Annapolis, Maryland, the capital, is home to The United States Naval Academy. Rich in history, with many historic buildings. The Maryland State House is the oldest in continuous legislative use in the United States. It is topped by the largest wooden dome built without nails in the nation.
