Delaware was the first state to ratify the United States Constitution.
Delaware is rich in history, with many historical homes and buildings, some prior to the Revolutionary War. Five properties make
up the Historic Houses of Odessa: the Corbit-Sharp House, the Wilson-Warner House, The Brick Hotel, the Collins-Sharp House, and
First National Bank of Odessa. In New Castle, visit the Dutch House, the Amstel House, the Old Library Museum, the Old New Castle
Court House, the Read House, and New Castle Presbyterian Church. In Wilmington, the Holy Trinity (Old Swedes) Church built in 1698
is the nation's oldest church building still standing as originally built and in regular use for worship. The church property includes
the Hendrickson House, a Swedish stone farmhouse, built on Crum Creek in 1690 and moved to this site in 1959.
While visiting Delaware City, you can take a trip back in time to the Civil War era by visiting Fort Delaware. Board the Three
Forts Ferry from the docks in Delaware City's Battery Park for a pleasant trip over to the fort. After visiting Fort Delaware and
Pea Patch Island, you can re-board the Three Forts Ferry and continue across the Delaware River to Fort Mott on the New Jersey coast.
The third fort for which the ferry is named is Fort DuPont located on the Delaware side of the river. It is separated from Delaware
City by the branch canal. It can be accessed by walking along the canal and crossing the Fifth Street Bridge.
In Lewes, Delaware there are 12 historic properties. They range in age from one of the oldest structures in the United States -
the Ryves Holt House, c. 1665 - to the Midway School, c. 1898. Milton?s historic district encompasses 200 homes listed on the National
Register. A short distance from the museum is the well known ?Governor Hazzard? home. The past governor is the helmsman in the famous
picture of George Washington crossing the Delaware.
The world's longest twin suspension bridge, The Delaware Memorial Bridge, links New Castle, Delaware with Pennsville, New Jersey.
Delaware is known for some of the cleanest beaches in the country. The Fenwick-Bethany Beach area provides visitors with
opportunities for water sports, boating, fishing and just relaxing, offering a slower pace for those who seek a more natural beach
experience. Rehoboth Beach has one of the ten best American boardwalks.
